The Ember of Nethys: Inside Our First Adventure

"The Ember of Nethys" is the first adventure available in Embertold — and it was designed to showcase everything the platform can do. Here's a look behind the curtain.
The Premise
A stolen elemental fragment — the Ember of Nethys — pulses with dangerous power somewhere beneath the Yawning Portal, Waterdeep's most famous tavern. If it isn't recovered, the Ember could tear reality apart. You need to find it, navigate the dangers guarding it, and decide what to do with it.
Simple enough? Not quite.
The Yawning Portal
The adventure begins in the Yawning Portal — a tavern built over the entrance to Undermountain, one of the most dangerous dungeons in the Forgotten Realms. The tavern is a character in itself: full of adventurers, merchants, informants, and trouble.
How you spend your time in the tavern matters. Talk to the right people and you'll learn crucial information. Talk to the wrong people and you might get set up. The AI knows every regular, every rumor, and every hidden agenda.
Branching Paths
The Ember of Nethys isn't linear. There are multiple ways to approach the core challenge:
- Social navigation — Charm, intimidate, or deceive your way through encounters
- Investigation — Gather clues, follow leads, piece together what happened
- Direct action — Fight through obstacles with strength and steel
- Subterfuge — Sneak, steal, and avoid confrontation
Your character's stats and your choices determine which approaches are available and effective. A high-Charisma bard has different options than a high-Strength fighter — and both can succeed.
The Merchant
Along the way, you'll encounter a dubious merchant with valuable information — for a price. Do you pay up? Try to steal the information? Threaten them? Each approach has consequences, and the merchant remembers how you treated them.
The Vaults
Beneath the tavern lie trapped vaults guarding the Ember. The traps aren't random — they're tied to the lore of the location, and a clever player who's been paying attention to the story can anticipate them.
Combat may be unavoidable in the vaults, but how you fight matters as much as whether you win. Creative tactics are rewarded with richer narration and better outcomes.
The Choice
When you finally reach the Ember of Nethys, you face the adventure's central dilemma. The Ember is powerful — dangerously so. What do you do with it?
We won't spoil the options. But we will say this: there's no "right" answer. Each choice has consequences that ripple through the conclusion of the adventure.
Design Philosophy
The Ember of Nethys was built around three principles:
- Player agency — Multiple valid approaches to every challenge
- Lore integration — Deep ties to Forgotten Realms canon
- Replayability — Different characters and choices lead to genuinely different stories
It's an adventure you can play again and again and still discover new paths. That's the promise of an AI Game Master — and The Ember of Nethys delivers.
