Inventory and Equipment: A Guide to Managing Your Gear

Your inventory is your lifeline. Knowing what you have — and when to use it — can mean the difference between triumph and defeat.
How Inventory Works
In Embertold, your inventory is tracked automatically by the AI Game Master. When you pick up an item, buy something from a merchant, or loot a chest, it's added to your inventory. When you use a potion, drop an item, or trade with an NPC, it's removed.
You can check your inventory at any time through the character panel during gameplay.
Item Types
Equipment
Weapons, armor, and accessories that you can equip. Equipped items affect how the AI resolves your actions — a character wielding a flaming sword gets different narrative outcomes than one fighting barehanded.
Consumables
Potions, scrolls, food, and other one-use items. Using a healing potion restores health. Using a scroll might cast a spell. The AI describes the effects narratively as they happen.
Quest Items
Special items tied to your current adventure. These are often keys to progressing the story — a stolen letter, a magical fragment, a royal signet ring.
Currency
Each universe has its own currency system. Gold pieces, silver marks, or whatever the world uses. You can buy and sell items, bribe NPCs, or gamble.
Managing Your Gear
Equipping Items
Open the inventory panel and equip weapons or armor. The AI takes your equipped items into account when narrating combat, social encounters, and exploration.
Using Items
You can use items directly from your inventory panel, or simply describe using them in your message. Say "I drink the healing potion" and the AI handles the rest — removing it from your inventory and narrating the effects.
Dropping Items
Need to lighten your load or leave something behind? Drop items through the inventory panel. Be careful — dropped items are gone for good.
Strategic Tips
- Hoard potions wisely. Healing items are precious. Don't burn through them on minor scratches.
- Equip for the situation. About to enter a negotiation? Maybe unequip the bloodstained battleaxe.
- Pay attention to quest items. If the AI gives you something unusual, it probably matters later.
- Manage your gold. Merchants offer useful items, but prices vary. Save up for when you really need something.
- Check before boss fights. Make sure you're equipped and stocked up before major encounters.
Items Generated by the AI
The Game Master can give you items that don't exist in any pre-built list. Find a mysterious artifact in a dungeon? The AI creates it on the spot, complete with a description and properties. This is one of the advantages of an AI-driven game — your loot is as unique as your story.
Your gear tells a story of its own. A battered shield picked up in your first battle, a ring gifted by a grateful NPC, a stolen crown that might get you in trouble — every item is a piece of your adventure's history.
